Anime of Tomorrow
Ro-Kyu-Bu! Ep 1
Initial impression – surprisingly interesting
Combining two traditionally unappreciated, niche genres in one anime isn’t typically thought of as a path to success. Ro-Kyu-Bu is a sports / loli anime… I’ll let that sink in for a second… sports / loli… I kid you not.
When freshman Hasegawa’s high school basketball team gets cancelled, he gets coerced into coaching an elementary girl’s basketball team. As the girls attempt to endear themselves to him, it starts to become clear there may be more to his current circumstances than he originally thought.
Despite the initial handicap of a strange genre blend, Ro-Kyu-Bu presents itself with some decent writing and plot development right away in the first episode. The amazing voice talent of Kana Hanazawa also helps make up for the initial shortcomings of the premise.
Ro-Kyu-Bu doesn’t avoid the usual loli transgressions, so I don’t have high hopes for the future. But if you like loli or sports anime, or you can at least set your prejudices aside, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by this strange genre mash-up.
