Seitokai no Ichizon Lv.2 Ep. 0

Initial impression – kindhearted, but harsh women

Autumn 2012 (?? episodes) (title literal translation – The Student Council’s Discretion Lv.2) (more info)

One of the greatest comedic strengths of Seitokai no Ichizon (Lv .1) was the degree to which it knows it’s an anime—giving it a wonderful ability to break the fourth wall and communicate directly with the audience.  I’m pleased to announce that Lv.2 continues that tradition.  Unfortunately, it may not be taking enough steps to get out of the shadow of its predecessor.  At this early stage in the series, it feels more like a reboot than a sequel—though I must admit that seeing the “before story,” of Ken Sugisaki’s path to getting the valedictorian seat on the student council was a nice revelation.

Where it goes from here and how much it manages to find its own identity is yet to be seen, but one thing I’m happy to see hasn’t changed is the strong personalities of the wide variety of young women Sugisaki interacts with.  It’s a great cast filled with unconventional—but not unheard of—character types including the height-challenged student council president Kurimu, sadist Chizuru, tomboy Minatsu and shy, gamer otaku Mafuyu.  And while Sugisaki may occasionally make sexually tense jokes around these girls, everyone takes it in good humor because it’s clearly intended as fun jest rather than harassment.  And afterwards Sugisaki lets the girls have their revenge to balance things out. Seitokai no Ichizon was and continues to be a unique take on the student council archetype of school drama anime and even after 3 years, its second iteration hasn’t dropped the ball.
